Swimming with orthosis or prosthesis

The hard part is the catch: finding a flat, steady surface to pull against so each stroke actually moves you through the water. Without it, one arm slips through while the other does the work, the rhythm falls apart, and what should feel weightless becomes a fight. For people with limited hand or arm function, that even pull isn't always there, and it's often the one thing keeping someone out of the pool. The right aid gives you a proper surface to push against, so the affected side contributes to the stroke and your focus can stay on the swim.

For swimming, the Explorer System is used with the Swim Module. The Explorer System is macu4’s lightweight, 3D-printed system and consists of a socket, the Explorer Ring as a connecting component, and a module adapted to the relevant activity. In the water, the Swim Module performs the function that would normally be carried out by the hand. It acts like a paddle and displaces water during the pulling phase, allowing the affected side to contribute actively to the swimming stroke instead of simply being carried along. The module is securely connected to the Explorer System via a ring and remains reliably in position. It is made from polyamide and is suitable for use in fresh water, chlorinated water and salt water. The Swim Module is available in two sizes and is selected to suit the size of the palm. When the affected side can displace the water effectively, the swimming stroke can be performed more evenly and the body can be kept more stable in the water instead of rolling excessively to one side. This allows you to work more specifically on your swimming technique and try different swimming strokes.
